I've put studio time on the back burner these last few weeks. The days of spending hours there preparing for the Nexus show are over and with car woes and grad school research, it's been difficult to make a way to that garage. My creative streak has been relegated to a small sketchbook and drawing pad, where I'm making drawings, cutting, and rearranging them.

Collage seems to be on everybody's brain.

But really, my studio life needs a jump start.
I wrote to my good pal Kori Marvelous and asked her to help me cheat.
Let's pretend I'm still in school. I just need one assignment to get cooking, to get back.

Any ideas?

Then i can hunker down and I'll have to take a jacket.

This project stemmed from my interest in people and in the human experience, and a desire to document my response to those around me. This has become a process of “people watching” which has led to a demonizing break down of the traditional portrait—attempts to notate my response of those in my life. The results provide a focus on brokenness, an act of sifting people down to their barest, and finding myself within them.

It was written of portrait painter Alice Neel, “The shelves of her studio are full of spirits seeking release from the bondage of her paintings and of being human. There is no peace and tranquility in the paintings, only agitated recognition of inevitable struggles on this earth… The faces in her portraits call for answers, but none are given. There is loneliness in these final judgments… and in these captured moments we sense a presence of ourselves.”

Here I have documented my understanding of interaction, of lack, and of speechlessness regarding first impressions and intuition. In the process of making these drawings, it has been impossible to avoid tapping into my own history and I have found that a person’s gesture or sigh may strike a chord within me. This work is a record of those moments and points of impact while investigating other people’s histories. It is a look at what lies beneath the surface of a person and a record of the impact it has left on me.

In feeling connections with my sitters, in being moved by what I see or what they tell me, I have come to realize the depth of my own brokenness. Studying their posture, assigning colors to the space surrounding them, I have begun to recognize the wringing of my own hands, my own posture, and through this project, I am also becoming more aware that in documenting their identities, I am speaking of my own.

Nexus was a great time.
It was fun recognizing people from the work on the wall.

And now it's quiet.
Back to the garage to make work for the November show at Chloe's.
And considering the gorgeous change of weather that's taking place, I don't mind the semi outdoor setting, or the gasoline fumes.
